théATRE is a Beijing based bakery specialized in tea infused pastry， sweeties and cakes.Project’s brief was to redefine a new space identity for the new store， oriented to a specific kids and family target， while keeping few existing elements such as the light blue brand identity color and the tea ceremony desk. A folded waved wall colored with the hues of the company’s blue is wrapping the whole technical box of kitchen， bar counter and exposed cake decoration area.A collage of different marbles on wall and floor is adding a new color palette characterizing the space， while five large hand-made chandeliers made of rice paper will create an unexpected element of surprise on the ceiling.
High taste in tea selection and quality values of théATRE will be expressed through a layout concept where simplicity plays a major role. The space is clearly divided into two halves： on one side the operational spaces of kitchen， staff rooms and bakery lab， on the other side the store space where customers can sit. Two long soft and sinuous seating benches marked by the horizontal lines will conceptually refer to the way tea plantations are following the mountains topography. The color is matching the selection of marbles type used on walls， while the shape has been designed to make it more visually appealing to the little customers. Seats are visually characterized by a strong and recognizable shape， and they represent a new théATRE iconic element： elegant and chic， yet comfortable and smooth. A softly playful atmosphere characterizes the seating area， which works like a theatre audience from which customers watch all performance related to tea， cakes and pastry preparation as if they were on a stage. A series of displays are placed right in front of the sofas， creating a system which includes exposed kitchen and bar with smoothies area， coffee corner and tea ceremony platform， but also shelves for tea related products and pick-up windows which are all engaging customers to interact.
The playful atmosphere has been extended on ceiling with the insertion of large rice-paper chandeliers specifically designed for the store and hand-made by designers at RAMOPRIMO， that will float like enlarged sculptures in the space above customers. The making process was inspired by Chinese craftmanship tradition： a special mix of rice and tree resin hand-made paper has been cut into smaller pieces， the many layers of which have been further assembled into a new shape and glued together around a large mold using natural rice glue. The process has provided the lamp a high elasticity， long lasting resistance and yet the possibility to be completely recyclable.
This general feeling of calm simplicity and balance will be also reflected in the color and material scheme： pastel tones of light brown， greenish and red， which are the colors of théATRE and which will reverberate on the clean flat steel surfaces. Background walls and floor are covered with special and unique overscale patchwork of large marble slabs， which reminds customers to the beauty of nature. A gentle Windsor beige marble has been chosen as main color for the background， keeping together all other colored elements of the space and donating a sense of lightness and brightness that will reflect on the polished steel surfaces. A brighter and a darker Coral red stones and a Lapis Lazuli green marble have been designed and cut to create a dynamic pattern of “floating” colored pieces， which visually connect to the color of chairs and to the color of the green-blue waved wall that is wrapping the bar and the external façade of the shop to the street.
