IRIS DANCE ART SPACE is a dance training institution that focuses on the teaching of Western classical dance. QISI DESIGN was commissioned to design a new dance classroom for it. The orientation of the project is to create a space with dance that uses as the media to stimulate women’s self-confidence and vitality, as well as a social and relaxing platform.

The site of the project is located in a high-rise office building. This kind of space with noisy public corridors, thick square columns and modern curtain walls makes it difficult for students to enter the context of classical dance. The designers use geometry, arrays, and curves to reshape the space, and through a series of scenes to help students complete the transformation of mood. It makes every dancer really put into the atmosphere of classical dance and enjoy it.

The column outside the main entrance slightly protrudes from the wall of the public corridor. It draws the sight of the crowd in the elevator direction to here. The glass sliding door retreats to the rear, and the presence of the front door becomes stronger. The first scene after people entering the venue is a 5-meter long corridor. The front desk is set at one end of the corridor. Designers did not set an open node at the entrance. The entrance space does not encourage people to stay.

The corridor has obvious guidance. It encourages visitors to go inside.

The corridor is connected by five arched openings. Related picture books and posters are placed between the arches. The strong shape and array relationship of the arch group increase the ritual sense of the corridor. Visitors through the long corridor have begun to unconsciously carry out psychological construction. Designers hope that visitors can temporarily get away from the noisy office environment and busy city life through this process.

When people walk through the corridor, they go to the living room which is the core area of the dance classroom. The living room space is more spacious under the contrast of narrow and long aisle space. This is a collection and distribution place, and also an area for students to wait, rest and socialize.

The sofa in the living room is backed by bookshelves and surrounded by low walls on both sides. Sofa and tea tables, chairs surround a private chat place.

The designers set up a multi-functional bar in the region near the classroom. Sitting at the bar, people can see the inside of the classroom through the French windows. The curve of the bar responds to the shape of the ceiling. The surface of the table changes from narrow to wide in the shape of water drops. Here’s another social experience. The bar can be used as a place for rest and communication. When an event is held, a narrow section of the bar can be used for placing dessert drinks. The wider side can be placed with champagne tower, cake, etc. This is a very public device. It’s also an important social place.

At the end of the living room is 4 metal round shelves that surrounding the structural square columns. The luster and delicacy of metal materials bring exquisite temperament to this space. The shelves are used to hold drinks. In addition to functionality, the shelves also add a relaxed atmosphere to the living room. The arc shape of the ceiling takes this place as the node. The curve suddenly changed direction, and also led the line of sight to the depth. Behind the round shelves is a more private negotiation area.

The owners hope that the negotiation area is not a closed, secret space with obvious sales purpose. The designers set up the negotiation area in the handover position of the living room and dressing area. The negotiation area is relatively independent but keeps in touch with other spaces. Curved walls blur the boundaries of the areas. There is a window facing the dance classroom in the negotiation area. When customers sit on the card seat, they can see the internal teaching scene. It can also be used as a place to rest and socialize.

The natural light of the day is diffused through the window from the dance classroom into this semi-private space. The niche and sculpture behind the card seat, the sandstone texture of the wall, the cashmere cushion and the soft light together create a quiet, private and artistic space feeling.

Go through the negotiation area and then go inside is the dressing area. The designers hope that students will strengthen their self-confidence through the process of changing clothes, and feel the real stunning transformation of oneself due to the dance.

▲通向更衣室的路径,the path to the dressing room ©筑嘉摄影 吕晓斌

The curved path to the dressing room guarantees privacy. The door of the dressing room cannot be seen directly from the public space. The light diffuses through the wall to the entrance, adding a sense of mystery. The door handles of the dressing rooms are deliberately made obliquely to enhance people’s feeling of opening the door. When people change their clothes and walk out confidently, the action of holding the handle and pushing the door forcefully can stimulate self-confidence.

The dressing room consists of four rows of lockers, which are arranged inside two arched doorways. The lockers in the dressing room are made L-shaped. In this way, the number of lockers can be increased as much as possible in the limited space while ensuring that there are multiple storage functions in an independent locker.

The scene of the dressing room of the theater ©筑嘉摄影 吕晓斌

A row of dressing tables and dressing lamps are set on the wall perpendicular to the lockers. This scene reminds people of a dressing room in a theater. When the students change into professional clothing and stand in front of the mirror, the ball lights closely arranged along the wooden veneer frame provide uniform and bright front lighting. The mirror can reflect the floodlight figure of the student.

In order to reduce the modernity of the facade curtain wall, the designers placed a row of arcades on the inner side of the curtain wall. The arcade is separated from the curtain wall by a small distance, and a gauze curtain is placed in the middle to completely conceal the glass curtain wall. By controlling the proportions of arcades, wall skirts and the array of lamps on the top, students feel a space with a classical temperament.

The door handles of the classroom are deliberately designed to be diagonal, and a spring device is installed on the top of the door. When entering the classroom, students need to push the door forcefully, and the handle that is inclined toward the direction of force is set to a thickness that is easy to hold. This action deepens the impression of the students and also arouses a kind of psychological hint that they seem to push a new life stage and usher in a new transformation.
