Independence and interactivity of a small corner shop

“它不需要一眼就看出来是面包店，但要能体现我们的特别”。
这是TOOOS BAKERY品牌方邀请我们设计时提出的唯一设计任务，期望我们为这家只制作方形吐司的全新烘焙品牌设计“性格”鲜明的店铺空间，不仅能承载日常的现场制作和零售，也能成为传递品牌理念的实体媒介。
“It doesn’t need to look like a bakery at first glance, but it should reflect our uniqueness.”
This was the sole design brief given by TOOOS BAKERY when they invited us to design a space with distinct “character” for their new bakery brand, which specializes exclusively in cube-shaped toast. The space needed to accommodate daily on-site production and retail while also serving as a physical medium to convey the brand’s philosophy.

项目场地选址在市中心一处综合性运动体育园区内，现将部分区域整体改造为以都市年轻人休闲生活为主的小型商业聚落。主体是九十年代建成的两层独立建筑，原为运动园区的配套商业，现改造划分为多个商业空间。
TOOOS选择了一层的东北侧转角店铺，面积仅35平方米，东侧紧邻园区内部道路，北侧面向开阔的运动场地。通过对现状条件的分析，如何利用建筑转角特点构建小空间店铺的独立，并结合商业区位环境赋予其媒介交互属性，是本项目改造设计思考的两个关键点。
The project is located within a comprehensive sports park in the city center, where parts of the area have been redeveloped into a small commercial cluster catering to the leisure lifestyles of urban youth. The main structure is a two-story standalone building constructed in the 1990s, originally serving as supporting commercial space for the sports park. It has now been renovated and subdivided into multiple commercial units.
TOOOS BAKERY selected a 35-square-meter corner unit on the northeast side of the first floor. The shop faces an internal road to the east and overlooks an open sports field to the north. Based on an analysis of the site conditions, the key considerations for the redesign were how to leverage the building’s corner characteristics to establish a sense of independence for the small space and how to incorporate interactive qualities aligned with its commercial context.
构建小空间的独立感
我们从建筑基本构成元素入手，为依附于主体建筑的小空间置入建筑构件-屋檐。
我们改造现状雨棚重新在店铺范围的立面上“掀起”两片轻盈的金属雨棚，其比例形式更接近屋檐，不但改变了店铺空间原本的内收形态，也因为有了“屋檐”使得整体空间在视觉上更独立，空间层次也更丰富。
Establishing a sense of independence for a small space
We started with the basic elements of architecture, introducing a building component—the eaves—to the existing facade. We added light-weight metal canopies, with proportions and form resemble the building eaves. This addition not only altering the originally blank shop front, but also making the entire space visually independent and spatially richer.

金属雨棚是铝制波纹板型材，阵列的三角桁架结构控制其“掀开”的角度，也分散建筑受力，完整的形式体现出雨棚屋檐的轻盈感。
结构内部隐藏了泛光照明，夜晚光从内部洒下，店铺整体柔和且温暖。
The metal canopies are made of aluminum corrugated panel profiles. An array of triangular trusses controls the “lifted” angle and distributes the structural load, achieving a form that embodies the sense of lightness.
Linear flood lights are concealed under the canopies, casting a soft, warm glow over the shop at night.

材料上我们选择对多种方形陶土砖再加工，因为陶土砖与吐司的制作过程类似，都会因为其原料不同、温度变化等因素的改变而影响其成品的外观，也正是这种变化出的差异性，让其有自然、质朴、亲切的材料感。
并且陶土砖所表现出来的质感也是对TOOOS BAKERY品牌手作、现制、自然的产品理念的呼应。
For materials, we used reprocessed square clay bricks on the external facade. The production process of clay bricks is similar to that of toast—both are influenced by factors such as raw materials and temperature variations, which affect the final appearance. It is precisely this variability that gives the material its natural, rustic, and warm quality.
Moreover, the texture expressed by the clay bricks echoes TOOOS BAKERY’s brand philosophy of handmade, freshly prepared, and natural products.

赋予空间交互媒介属性
自媒体时代，商业空间自身的媒介属性也是重要的设计指标。对于如此小的店铺空间，我们利用其转角特点融入了传播界面和互动功能。
靠近道路的是东侧人流量大，我们用整块的落地玻璃让行人路过时就能清楚了解室内的陈列与活动。而通透的幕墙本身也可以结合室内陈列呈现完整的产品主题宣传，多层次的展示吸引过往行人的探索和传播欲望。
Imbuing the space with interactive qualities
In the era of self-media, the inherent media attributes of commercial spaces have become an important design consideration. For such a small shop, we leveraged its corner location to integrate communication interfaces and interactive functions.
The east side, with its high pedestrian traffic, features full-height glass walls, allowing passersby to clearly see the interior displays and activities. The transparent facade can also serve as a complete platform for product-themed promotions in combination with interior displays, enticing exploration and sharing among pedestrians through multi-layered presentations.

北侧相对东侧更安静，且面向运动场地。因此我们把入口和座位设置于此，整面开启的折叠窗能延伸有限的室内空间，进而去连接远处的运动绿地，结合基础的固定家具为进店顾客提供日常的社交环境，既能对外观景，又能对内交流。
The north side is quieter compared to the east and faces the sports field. Therefore, we positioned the entrance here with a built-in seating area. The fully openable folding windows extend the limited interior space, connecting it to the distant green sports field. This provides customers with a social environment where they can enjoy both the external view and internal interactions.

TOOOS BAKERY店铺设计是我们对小型商业空间改造的新实践，我们尝试重构与空间相关的基本元素，为小型商业店铺在市场竞争环境下建立独立感和互动性。
TOOOS BAKERY’s shop design represents our latest exploration in renovating small commercial spaces. We aimed to reinterpret fundamental spatial elements, establishing both independence and interactivity for small retail shops in a competitive market environment.
