Site and Background
This project is located within Honghui Mengzhi Park, Huangpu District, Shanghai, specifically as an auxiliary building of Building 8. Nestled independently on the elevated platform between two main buildings, its structure features a narrow, elongated spatial form with limited physical dimensions. However, its interior boasts excellent conditions for natural daylight penetration and a pure spatial atmosphere, providing a unique foundation for design intervention.
The functional positioning of WOOW Coffee Academy lies between a “learning venue” and a “display interface” — it serves not only as an educational carrier dedicated to the dissemination of professional coffee knowledge but also as a composite space integrating open events, themed workshops, and content creation. The core design challenge is: how to simultaneously accommodate diverse functional needs such as theoretical teaching, practical training, and event exhibitions within this limited plan, while ensuring users enjoy a rich spatial experience and maintaining the pure texture of the space.
Design Strategy
We take “the turning of light” as the core design concept and select “black and white” as the medium for spatial narrative — the two create an extreme contrast in both visual presentation and sensory experience, thereby establishing the order logic of the entire space. Two black volumes (spatial boxes) are precisely placed on either side of the entrance area, acting as “transitional porches” and “spatial thresholds” leading to the core space, guiding visitors to step into the depths of the venue in a gradual manner.

Visitors first pass through the narrow corridor defined by the first black volume: during their movement through the dim space, a ray of skylight gently filters down from the top. The presence of this light allows users to clearly perceive the sense of dimensional compression at the visual level while ensuring they can recognize and orient themselves within the surrounding environment. Then, after a turn, they enter the bright, transparent white core area of the academy. This spatial transition “from darkness to light” not only creates a highly dramatic experience with strong tension inside the space but also builds an exclusive sense of ritual for entering the learning venue at the psychological level of users.
The white academy space in the middle section uses light-transmitting sheer curtains as the enclosing interface. This design not only ensures the overall openness and transparency of the space but also enables flexible functional division according to teaching scenarios or event needs. The slight movement of the sheer curtains in the wind and their soft light-transmitting property keep the space alive with a “sense of breathability” and maintain a warm, soft boundary. In addition to undertaking the basic function of “spatial transition,” the black spaces on both sides are further integrated with auxiliary functional modules such as a studio, a professional photography live broadcast room, a storage area, and restrooms. The dark interface encloses these diverse functions tightly, which not only effectively shortens the movement route of users but also forms a clear and rhythmic spatial sequence at the visual level.

Light and Time
We expect the act of “learning” to occur not only between desks and professional equipment but also to be integrated into the natural flow of light and time. A skylight is carefully opened at the top of the black volumes, allowing natural light to seep into the dark interior space in a gentle manner. The moving light spots on the floor and vertical surfaces naturally become “spatial scales” that record the passage of time. Such a design endows daily actions like walking, pausing, and waiting with a unique sense of ritual — the black spaces are no longer merely transitional carriers but are transformed into a “prelude to perception” for users to experience the core space.

We always hope that within this space, “learning” is not just a one-way activity of knowledge transmission, but more importantly, a delicate experiential process where the body interacts with the space, and users perceive the passage of time, changes in light, and the aroma of coffee.
