HYM Music is a brand that focuses on creating fashionable and young vinyl culture with sophisticated thinking. HYM Music provides a variety of services for vinyl record culture, including distribution and promotion of vinyl records for artists and design and development of original vinyl record player brands. HYM Music is also the creator of China’s first vinyl production line. The first offline store of the brand is located in Nantou City in Shenzhen, an ancient town with more than 1700 years. With the reform and opening up of Shenzhen and the intensification of urbanization, the town has become a typical urban village. In recent years, thanks to the strong support of the Shenzhen government, the ancient city has been rebuilt and has now become a classic urban renewal project in Shenzhen.
The combined efforts of Studio COLY and HYM Music have perfectly presented a high-quality vinyl record culture flagship store： Super Vinyl Factory.
▲入口立面 Shop front
The shop is located in the IF Factory which lies at the northern end of the town, right next to Dajiale Plaza, and is located at an important traffic interchange in the ancient town park. The factory was formerly a clothing factory in the urban village of Nantou, Shenzhen, and has become a “creative factory” with various functions after transformation. There are mid-to-high-end catering brands nearby, which forms agglomeration effect on new commercial activities.

The shop is located on the first and second floor of IF factory. Due to its former form as a clothing factory, the first floor is nearly 5 meters high , which greatly increases the plasticity of the site.

Before the start of the project, the owner communicated with us that he hoped to replicate a complete set of vinyl record production process to his store in the form of a mechanical device.
▲多功能柜体 Multifunctional Shelf
Inspired by various vinyl record factory elements, combined with the plasticity of the floor height on site, we extracted a classic element -the exhaust pipe from vinyl factories back then, and set it as the theme element of the space.
▲夹层平台 Main Exhibiton Platform
An important part of vinyl culture is all kinds of good-looking vinyl covers. We made the most of the floor height of the venue to build an L-shaped full-height vinyl record display wall, to display the vinyl records produced by HYM Music in the most intuitive form. By creating split-level spaces in the site, customers can appreciate these good-looking album covers, and explore albums that are placed on high levels, which increases the sense of exploration and practicality of the space.
Lastly, we created the new “Super Vinyl Factory” by using carefully selected materials. We filled the space with industrial brushed stainless steel, galvanized iron, and black metal, and combined with the bright yellow brand color of HYM Music to build a low-key and bold combination.

The venue needs to carry out three main functions proposed by the owner： vinyl cultural display and retail, catering, and multi-functional flash space. We set up a typical beverage service area on the main entrance of the store on the first floor, and separate different functions through three clear customer flow lines.

The production of vinyl is an interesting process. We work closely with HYM Music to arrange a set of mechanical devices that simulate the production of vinyl in the space. The mechanical device is located at the bottom of the mezzanine, including the production plant of vinyl and the simulated transmission pipelines. We designed a circular transmission pipeline under the split level, and laid a black perforated aluminum sheet above the pipeline as a split level floor. A vinyl record recording room is arranged under the stairs, which allows guests who are interested to record a vinyl record on site.

As a classic cultural element, vinyl records carry the self-expressions of generations of musicians. We hope to present this cultural element in a direct and interesting way. Despite the full-height vertical display walls that we use to present various vinyl record covers, we also set up a number of bright yellow scouring cabinets in the “factory” to fulfill customers’ needs for disc hunting.

Through this cooperation with HYM Music, Studio COLY perfectly combines vinyl culture, industrial elements and retail space together, which displays vinyl record culture from multiple dimensions. In the meantime, a unified design language is employed throughout the entire space, bringing brand culture, business logic and space logic into one, which presents a brand new “super vinyl factory” in Shenzhen.
