After the dream they set out in search of that city; they never found it, but they found one another; they decided to build a city like the one in the dream.––Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities

The Mingsi House x Invisible Cities

The Mingsi House is a fashion brand rooted in Shanghai, delivering a comfortable lifestyle. Lee, the brand owner, has excellent imagination and tenacious execution. In his crazy store expansion plan for 2021, TOPOS and MEEM have injected a fresh visual and spatial gene into Mingsi House, building one “Invisible City” after another.

City of Maze

Isometric Drawing of the North Bund store © TOPOS DESIGN

Plan of the North Bund store © TOPOS DESIGN

The North Bund store consists of neatly arranged arches. The center of the store is a circular lounge area, with corridors and arches limiting the specific routes of the space. The archway as a hanging area allows the number of telescopic hanging rods to be freely adjusted, making the space more flexible and changeable. Streets, squares, and overlapping arches form a visual maze experience.

City of Garden

Isometric Drawing of the Weide Road store © TOPOS DESIGN

Plan of the Weide Road store © TOPOS DESIGN

The Weide Road Street store serves as a shuttle-able garden, and the front yard is intended to be used more as a rest area for consumers. We tried to reflect the relationship between the house and the courtyard in the interior space. The arched porch roof and open garden emphasize the fresh and concise temperament of the space.

City of Wonderland

Isometric Drawing of the Changfeng Dayue store  © TOPOS DESIGN

Plan of the Changfeng Dayue store  © TOPOS DESIGN

Mingsi House in Changfeng Dayue Mall is located on the 2nd floor of the mall next to the children’s plaza, with the two ends of the door facing the plaza and the outdoor atrium respectively. The inward-facing doorway is open, and the outward-facing doorway is shaped by a capsule, enclosing a lounge area for consumers. Mingsi House’s parent-child activity area uses a capsule garden as the core of the space, creating a free flowing playful leisure area for children.

City of Faith

Isometric Drawing of the “1000 trees” store © TOPOS DESIGN

Plan of the “1000 trees” store  © TOPOS DESIGN

We wanted to leave a simple but powerful spatial experience in “1000 trees”of Tianan, a new landmark in Shanghai. A wide and tall arched corridor serves as the main body of the space, giving Mingsi a spatial memory of classical spirit.

City of Cave

Isometric Drawing of the Fengchao AI store  © TOPOS DESIGN

Plan of the Fengchao AI store © TOPOS DESIGN

The West Coast Fengchao AI store continues the design language of the soft lines of the previous series. The doorway shape is more free and irregular, preserving the open square space. The various spaces presented through the caves are more gentle in mood.

City of Wave

Isometric Drawing of the Hongqiao Tiandi store © TOPOS DESIGN

Plan of the Hongqiao Tiandi store © TOPOS DESIGN

Hongqiao Tiandi store is blurred by the curves of the wave between the mall and the store. Instead of guiding consumers at the entrance, the atrium is set back to the maximum. A glance at the curved backdrop is an open forecourt space, giving customers a free strolling space experience.

Invisible or Visible

Invisible City is a self-renewal and breakthrough in the brand upgrade of Mingsi House, which is not only a series of visual and spatial experiments, but also a bold foresight of future consumer culture. The Visible is miniature cities with different metaphors, and the warm flowing curves change between different cities. The Invisible is the spatial memory of déjà vu, just like the brand core of “warmth, not off from home”. We are grateful to Lee for refusing the traditional and mechanical replication of standard stores and choosing to build one dream city after another in different corners of Shanghai to embrace the beauty.
