Good design is as little design as possible. Less, but better.
— Dieter Rams
Located at Liuyun Residential Community in Tianhe District, Guangzhou, Drunk N’ Jump (TIAOHAI) Guangzhou is the very first drunkery of the brand TIAOHAI opened outside Beijing. Today in order to meet the growing business needs within the neighbourhood, a newly expanded store has been remodelled using an adjacent existing pub accommodating at least 20 of TIAOHAI’s friends.
An adaptive strategy with the minimum interference of the site was presented by R-BAS as an answer to the design task through a thorough diagnosis of the programme due to a relatively limited budget — the notion that under the premise of crediting the status quo, the original circulation and decoration of the interior, the visual language of the space is reshaped by replacing the finishing materials and components to be consistent with the philosophy of TIAOHAI. R-BAS was also called upon to design the furniture of this project.
The reuse focuses on the key points that were discussed at the start of the commission — overwriting the ACM sheets on the façade with exposed aggregate concrete commonly seen in 1980s Canton (Guangzhou); a combined bolted-welded galvanised lightweight-steel-framed canopy that is created to maximise the architectural tension making the al fresco both extroverted and introverted in nature, supplementing the insufficient indoor drinking area, and promoting interactions among people under the shade of this informal space. During specific periods around the summer solstice, the sun shines in from the circular skylight, illuminating the orange logo of Drink N’ Jump.
For the interior, following the ideology of lessening the interference the floor, wall and ceiling are reclad with low-cost finishes and coating, e.g., epoxy paint, marine-grade plywood and PVC decorative film, where the substrate layers are not demolished. The room is deepened as the mirror mounted on the back wall offers a glowing accent. Manufactured by 201 steel composed of higher carbon, the faux beam in the staff zone easily attracts the magnetic brewery draught boards for daily operations.
The structure of the old bar counter was retained after partial removal. Within the staff zone is a deliberately designed sunken floor for the purpose of installing kegerators, conveying a narrative of kindness from the drunkery.
