Baimajian Recreation Bar is located in The Scenic Spot of Dragon Pond, Baimajian in Suzhou. The scenic spot covers an area of 7 square kilometers and is the ecological “green lung” of Suzhou High-tech Zone. The lakes and mountains in the scenic spot are particularly beautiful and colorful. The project is adjacent to Longchi lake in the south and Fengtan lake in the north. We wanted to create a landscape building that would bring natural scenery into the building.

The design is a renovation project, one of the major difficulties is the contradiction between the original structure and the new functional space requirements. The original site is a temporary building with pitched roof and wooden structure. The shape proportion and material of the original building do not conform to the simple and young tonality of the brand. Moreover, the original structure of the original building is complex and it is impossible to change its interior. After several rounds of deliberation, we finally created an iconic and unique online celebrity cafe while preserving the original structure and walls.

In order to echo the pitched roof form of the original building, and continue the design elements of LIM Coffee’s sloped white walls. The original wooden house is encased in a pure white square box shell. The facade is extended inwards by window openings in the form of pitched roofs, connecting the original building to the square box outside.

Adopting this approach, on the one hand, the newly built external facade structure is separated from the original structure to ensure the safety of the structure; On the other hand, different from the conventional, the use of house-shaped windowing forms to continue the sloping roof elements and add interest to the building.

The white and pure facade casts the shadows of the trees on both sides of the walkway. The whole building blends in with nature.

Through the trestle bridge, we can see the pure white buildings on the opposite side. The main body of the building is hidden in the mountains and trees and only one corner is exposed outside the forest. The old buildings stand with new posture and appearance, as if telling their previous and present life stories.

The new facade is made of steel frame and cement fiberboard. Partially newly built external walls are enclosed with the original internal walls to form an internal courtyard and introduce natural light.

The original scenic building has three floors. After the transformation, the main function of the underground floor is the logistics area, the first floor is the entrance and balcony area, and the second floor is the open dining area. The three floors are connected by a spiral staircase.

The original interior structure is complex. The arrangement of beams and pillars is close, which has a great influence on the processing of internal space. The dense square pillars were wrapped with umbrella-shaped columns. Smallpox breaks up with irregular circle to break the dreariness of the original roof.

The indoor umbrella pillar rises like a tree trunk and the “canopy” of the roof extends in all directions, forming morphological echoes with the trees on both sides of the outdoor walkway. Users walk in the interior, as if walking in a pure white “forest”.

The ground floor can be divided into three functional areas: storage, bathroom and kitchen. The toilet is located in the middle of the building, along with a spiral staircase, as an accessible area for both customers and support staff. The warehouse is separated from the kitchen.

The ground floor is the area where customers enter the cafe. In the plane function layout, the front desk, entrance hall and box are set up. The front desk and entrance hall are set on the east side of the plan, while the two boxes are set on the quiet west side. The two boxes, one in the south and the other in the north, can enjoy different views of Dragon Pond and Fengtan through the outer window.

Two inner courtyards surrounded by new and original walls are set in the lobby area and the south facing private rooms. Therefore, the first-floor plane not only has the scenic area to the outside and open natural landscape, but also more introverted and private man-made landscape.

According to the original building plan, the second floor of the ground is set as an open dining area on the premise of retaining the structural column network. The open plane setting ensures the flexibility of future space use. The spiral staircase is located on the east side of the dining area to ensure the integrity of the plan of the dining area.

How to provide comfortable space for participants to enjoy and communicate in the fengshui treasure land with all the lakes and mountains? How to balance the relationship between various elements? Are of great importance. LIM coffee is simple and youthful. LIM coffee’s white design elements are used in the renovation, while the roof form of Windows cleverly preserves the pitched roof form of the original building. Far view hidden in the mountains, close view in the shadow of the trees. A touch of pure white exposed and the surrounding contrast, eye-catching. Trees stand in forest and white forest umbrella columns rise from the ground inside the building. LIM Coffee will bring youthful vitality and a wonderful space for communication to the Baima Jian Longchi Scenic area in Suzhou.
