One day, Kuafu decided to chase and catch the Sun. He followed the Sun from the East to the West, draining the Yellow River and the Wei River (all rivers and lakes crossing his path) to quench his burning thirst. However, the big rivers were also unable to quench his thirst, and as he searched for more water, he eventually died of dehydration. The wooden club he was carrying grew into a vast forest of peach trees called the Deng Forest.

在短短两年内,夸父炸串突破千店,并于今年完成了3轮近1.5亿元的融资。作为行业头部,夸父炸串创始人Zero展现了非凡的洞察和想象力,TOPOS DESIGN有幸受邀为其研发属于后疫情时代的未来社区店。在近半年的精心选址、设计与施工后,位于南京东路商圈的社区店终于开幕了。

KWAFOOD Fried Chuan Group has broken through thousands of stores in just two years, and completed three rounds of financing which is about 150 million CNY in this year. The founder Zero has shown extraordinary insight and imagination as the leader of this business, and it’s TOPOS DESIGN’s honor to be invited to develop the community stores in the post-pandemic era for KFCG. After a series of preparations on the site selection, programming, schematic design and construction works, the community store located in East Nanjing Road business circle has finally been opened.

夸父,祖籍四川,善于奔跑,好吃炸串。作为远古时代的网红,他成名于光怪陆离的《山海经》,代表作就是逐日。极具魔幻色彩的《山海经》,大约是华夏远古先民基于现实生活的认知叙事。关于夸父追日的典故,我们很喜欢一种极具想象力的另类解读:远古时期,夸父是造访地球的外星人,而他所追逐的正是酷似太阳的外星飞船。魔幻与现实的拼贴,后现代十足的画面感,这是设计的原点。

Kuafu, who was originally from Sichuan, and he was good at running and delicious fried skewers. As a cyber celebrity in ancient times, he was famous for the grotesque The Classic of Mountains and Rivers, one of the most known pieces is “Kuafu Chasing the Sun.” The Classic of Mountains and Rivers is an extremely magical text about the cognitive narration of ancient Chinese ancestors’ real life. However, we prefer another very imaginative analysis of Kuafu’s story: In ancient times, Kuafu was an alien who visited the Earth, and he was chasing an alien spaceship that looks like the sun. The combination of ancient fantasy and the full sense of postmodern painting has become the inspiration of this design.

夸父,来自神秘东方的远古神族,降临魔都上海,将成为一个充满魔幻现实主义的都市奇观。

Kuafu, an ancient god who came from the Eastern myth, has landed on the magical city – Shanghai and he will become an urban spectacle which is full of miraculous realism.

空间站与街道 space station and the street

夸父炸串空间站毗邻南京东路,周边业态丰富,人流量巨大,是都市巨构下难得的步行尺度。场地面宽10米,进深8米,为一层沿街商铺,并有独立门头入口。作为次街,现有沿街商铺与街道的界面封闭,游客匆匆而过,缺乏让人流连的空间热点。在设计之初,我们就决定将场地的界面打开,模糊室内外的边界感,让路人无形之中置身于空间站之中。茫茫宇宙之中,谁也不知道下一秒会遇见什么样的惊喜。

KFCG Space Station is adjacent to Nanjing East Road, with its diversities on business formats and large flow of people, it has an unusual pedestrian scale under the huge urban structure. The site is 10 meters long and 8 meters wide. It is a street shop on the ground floor with an independent entrance. As a secondary street, the existing interface between shops and the street is enclosed, and they are hard to catch visitors’ attention. At the beginning of the design, we decided to open up the interface of the site, blurring the sense of boundary between interior space and exterior space, and bring visitors into the space station softly. In the vast universe, nobody knows what will surprise you in the next moment.

灯箱不一定是为了照明,也可能是想象的转换。立体塑形的黄色胶囊店招犹如时空变换的按钮,开启夸父空间站之旅。形象的动漫语言是夸父星人对碳基生物友好的示意。我们挖掘场地的建筑特征,用玻璃胶囊包裹裸露承重柱,以装置橱窗的形式作为立面的视觉中心。粗糙裸露肌理的混凝土柱宛如星球原生土壤制成的培养基,被玻璃罩禁锢,培养硅基生命体。

Light boxes are not only used for illumination, they can also be a connection between imagination and real life. The three dimensional yellow capsule shop is like a time-space switch button to start a journey to KFCG Space Station. The animated language symbolized Kuafu’s friendly gesture to carbon-based creatures. We excavated the architectural characters of the site, wrapped exposed load-bearing columns with glass capsules and used the installation window as the visual center of the facade. And the rough concrete column with bare texture acts as a culture medium which is made from the planet’s native soil, and imprisoned by glass enclosures to foster silicon-based life forms.

一个优秀的空间站必须将功能高效集约化。空间站围绕中岛的太空舱为核心,将所有设备与工作人员集中于此。太空舱的界面采用椭圆形玻璃窗的形式,制造通透明亮的场景感。大面积雾面不锈钢的使用,使空间站充满了纯粹而细腻的未来科技感,并与周边的五彩市井形成了强烈的对比。除此之外,我们将后厨区域以及卫生间置于空间后侧,用镜面不锈钢形成隔断。通过完整的镜面不锈钢墙面,使面向顾客的空间完整纯粹,视觉感官的放大形成视错。

A great space station must be used efficiently and intensively. The space station is surrounding the capsule on the central island, where all equipment and staff are placed. The interface of the capsule with oval shaped glass windows creates a transparent and bright scene. In addition, the use of a large area of matte stainless steel gives the station a pure and delicate sense of future technology, and forms a strong contrast with the colorful bazaar. Besides, we placed the kitchen area and bathroom at the back of the space, with mirrored stainless steel to form a partition. And through the mirrored stainless steel wall, the consumers’ space is completely pure, and the amplification of visual senses generates a visual illusion.

空间站穿梭于宇宙之中,掠过星球表面。不同于不锈钢的纯粹高冷,我们在太空站的两侧墙面,即落客区覆盖了整墙炎热粗粝的红色岩石。以有机自然对抗几何人工,制造视觉感官上的对比冲突。软装搭配永恒经典的铝合金海军椅,全金属外壳的赛博朋克即时感。天花的设计提取了宇宙的星球元素,太空舱周围是延续肌理的星轨,同时散落着发光的星体。我们将星体也植入了岩石墙中,使原本二维的天花延续到三维的空间中。

The space station travels through the universe, skimming over the surface of planets. Instead of using stainless steel only, we covered both sides of the station’s walls, which is the seating area, with red rock with a hot and coarse tone. In this way, the contrast between organic nature and geometric artificiality creates a conflict either visually or sensory. Soft outfit with timeless classic aluminum navy chairs is filled with cyberpunk immediacy in full metal casing. The design of the ceiling is inspired by planetary elements in the universe. The capsule is surrounded by a continuation of the engraving of the orbit, and scattered with glowing stars. Apart from that, we also insert illuminating planets into the rock walls, so that the two-dimensional ceiling is extended into the three-dimensional space.

夸父炸串售卖的不仅仅是美味的炸串,更是在这市井长巷,人间烟火的清晨或傍晚向人们送达最深切的温暖,和对美好生活的无限想象。《山海经》中夸父寄托了古代先民探索自然,征服世界的顽强意志。在夸父炸串空间站的设计中,我们为夸父炸串重塑空间叙事,在充满了上海风情的市井中置入一个异次元的平行世界,犹如宇宙空间站投射在地球摩登都市的镜像,夸父星球的文明在此起航。

KFCG is not only selling delicious fried skewers, but also delivering warmth and an infinite imagination of beautiful life to people who are full of energy every day. In The Classic of Mountains and Rivers, Kuafu sustains the ancient ancestors’ aspiration to explore nature, and to conquer the world with a strong will. In the design of KFCG Space Station, we reconstructed the space narrative for KFCG, and put a parallel world of different dimensions into the town which is full of Shanghai style, just like mapping the space station on the modern city on the Earth. The civilization of the Kuafu Planet is ready to launch from this station.
