In the spring of 2021, we were invited to Dali to seek the voice and expression of a new hotel. As we journeyed through Dali’s natural environment, Bai ethnic culture, and architectural features, we discovered the distinctive character of this land. We therefore defined the hotel’s spatial direction by balancing local identity with brand culture. Taking traditional Bai dwellings as the prototype, the design borrows scenery, brings in natural light, guides the wind, and reveals the character of the place within the limited site, naturally connecting sightseeing, tea tasting, accommodation, and leisure. In this way, a vacation space is created that not only carries forward the local cultural context, but also responds to contemporary lifestyles.
The hotel is located in Xiabuqing Village along Huanhai West Road, Dali City, Yunnan Province. It adjoins Erhai Lake to the east and the village and Cangshan Mountain to the west, approximately 9 kilometers away from Dali Old City. The hotel was constructed in three phases. The first phase consists of a building formed through the integrated renovation of two traditional Bai dwellings, with a site area of 277.5 square meters, a building area of 378 square meters, and a building height of 7.77 meters. It was constructed through the relatively independent connection of a reinforced concrete frame with brick-and-timber structures.
Growing Naturally In Inheritance
The building occupies a relatively small site and is affected by the traffic along Huanhai West Road, which limits both the sense of stay and the depth of the courtyard. The design is developed through three aspects: landscape optimization, architectural renewal, and business format implantation. On the one hand, the sound of waves, sunrise, reefs, withered wood, and other natural conditions of Erhai Lake are translated into elements of the courtyard landscape, making the courtyard a complement to the Erhai Lake environment. On the other hand, with restrained intervention, the original Bai ethnic building and brick-and-concrete building are preserved, while a contemporary “square box” is inserted between them for renovation and repair, forming an evolving spatial relationship in which the past, present, and future coexist. Taking advantage of the architectural conditions of the “square box,” its roof is transformed into an accessible and operable public interface for sightseeing, thereby restoring the view of Cangshan Mountain blocked by the surrounding dwellings and creating a dual spatial experience of “facing the sea” and “overlooking the mountain.”
Respecting Architecture And Returning to Function Itself
The treatment of the original Bai architecture is based on respect and repair: continue the regional forms such as traditional Chinese palace-style roof, upturned eaves and elegantly interconnected corners, walls adorned with paintings; repair weathered woodwork, damaged roofs and building skins, and carry out necessary reinforcement for beam column walls. Excessive indoors decoration is avoided as much as possible, with no redundant skirting line, suspended ceiling, door pocket and surface decoration, making the space present a state of rustic, clear, and durable.
The spatial layout fully considers orientation, daylighting, and ventilation. Openable windows are provided in the guest rooms and public areas wherever possible, with their placement responding to the angle of sunlight determined by the geographical location. Natural light is used as the primary source of illumination, while white wall and ceiling surfaces enhance reflection and improve lighting efficiency, reducing the artificial manipulation of light and excessive reliance on artificial lighting. The interior integrates different functions within an open and unobstructed spatial arrangement, reducing unnecessary enclosed partitions, while ceiling fans promote air circulation and further reduce dependence on electrical equipment.
Starting from the perspective of actual use, the guest room design reorganizes the functional relationships between washing, bathing, storage, rest, and the experience of the five senses. It minimizes distractions such as electronic products, noise, and commercial promotion, allowing the body and mind to return, through the experience of vacation, to a comfortable dimension of perception, restoration, and self-discovery. The furniture is mainly made of solid wood, supplemented by natural materials such as cotton, linen, and stone, with pleasant tactile qualities as the primary consideration. Bedding, toiletries, fragrances, and audio equipment are selected to correspond with the spatial atmosphere and bodily experience, while exhibition-style display is rejected in favor of practical use.
The public area on the first floor accommodates breakfast, coffee, wine tasting, and daily social interaction, concentrating the complementary functions beyond the guest rooms in one place and forming a clear division between active and quiet zones. A balanced proportion is maintained between the guest rooms and public spaces, allowing guests either to enjoy solitude or to engage naturally with like-minded people in an unfamiliar environment. This relaxed vacation social experience helps to break the sense of restraint felt when traveling away from home and enables emotions to be effectively released. The courtyard facing Erhai Lake mainly serves independent guest reception and landscape viewing. Through the introduction of reefs, withered wood, and water features, the separation created by the road is softened, forming a transitional space with clearly defined areas that remain relatively connected.
Establishing Emotional Temperature Through Materials with Life Attributes
The project is based on natural materials such as earth, wood, brick, tile, and stone. The tiled roofs, timber structures, and old walls of the original buildings are fully preserved, while the newly introduced parts are extended through natural materials including solid wood panels, stone, white cement, weathered iron, cotton, and linen. Stone is further developed into different forms, such as washed aggregate, terrazzo, travertine, and rubble stone. This restrained material approach enriches the visual and tactile layers while reducing noise pollution and preventing unnecessary decoration from consuming people’s attention.
The design intentionally preserves the traces generated through the use of materials. Rounded corners, signs of damage, natural lines, handcrafted textures, and aged surfaces together form a lingering presence of time that can be touched and perceived. The relationship between architecture, objects, and people is no longer limited to function, but develops through the contact of everyday use into a warm, uplifting, and continuous source of emotional nourishment.
A vacation is a departure from the routines arranged for us—a journey of perception, exploration, and self-reflection. We allow architecture to return to the essence of dwelling, letting sunlight arrive and air renew, so that people may find a sense of ease within the embrace of wind, light, sea, and village. Different ways of living can thus generate genuine resonance, allowing architecture to become a place endowed with the qualities of life.
