ARTWOOD originates from trees — from leaves, timber to the scent of wood.At its core, it seeks to tell the story of a single tree — creating a brand where wood and nature are seamlessly woven into everyday life.

In 《The Book of Jin》, the term “Xuan Chamber” refers to a room adorned with jade. In  Xuan Chamber, every wooden creation is crafted with the same precision and grace — like black jade, delicately carved to reveal its inner brilliance.

As stated in 《The Kaogong Ji》: “Heaven has its seasons, Earth has its vital breath, materials have their beauty, and craftsmanship has its skill.” Wood is not only a medium of form, but also a discipline of spirit. To understand wood is to grasp the Chinese reverence for materials and craftsmanship — and, through them, the art of living and the perception of the cosmos.

Chapter I: Weaving Wood

To weave wood — at first, it sounds counterintuitive, even contradictory to its natural character. Yet it precisely embodies our renewed way of thinking in designing Xuan Chamber: to let flooring evolve beyond its plane, transforming into a spatial, three-dimensional language — weaving together multiple possibilities of form and experience within the space.

The exterior façade is composed of reused herringbone flooring, reassembled into a woven surface. The interlaced gaps create a sense of permeability and curiosity between inside and out, shaping the chamber into a fluid, commercial realm.Light filters through these woven textures, softly casting the language of design onto the surroundings — turning the entire space into a visually flowing, interactive scene of commercial art.

Inside the space, a warm lantern glows — formed by vertically arranged herringbone flooring.By altering the scale, shape, and proportion of the wooden planks, we explored how rhythm and emotion shift through different compositions, allowing the same craftsmanship to narrate entirely different spatial poetics.

Beneath the product display area, we reveal the depth of time through the most literal act of weaving — layer upon layer of wooden samples preserved from past ARTWOOD flooring projects. The profound walnut, the open-grained oak, the humble cedar — some dark, some pale; some long, some short. Together, they form a chronicle of wood, solidifying the memory of years gone by and quietly recounting each chapter of creation.

Chapter II: Xuan Chamber

At the heart of the triangular space stands a black circular pavilion, entirely crafted from ARTWOOD flooring — Zhuomu · Inkstone — its presence resembling polished jade, serving as the spiritual core of the environment. We named it “Xuan”, not only for its resemblance to “rotation,” echoing the circular and fluid architectural imagery, but also for its ancient meaning — “beautiful jade” — a tribute to the traditional Chinese reverence for wood as both a precious material and a symbol of virtue.

The outer facade of the pavilion reveals ART WOOD’s ongoing exploration and study of wood, telling the stories of “Researching Wood,” “Selecting Wood,” “Woodcraft,” and “Wood Objects.”

Wood expresses itself through texture and structure, yet within it resides the craftsman’s spirit and the soul of an era. Silent but profound, it embodies ritual in its form and carries meaning through its making. Tracing the lineage of traditional Chinese woodworking, we seek out aged timbers marked by the passage of time — each bearing its own story and memory.

“Ting zhe, ting ye — a pavilion is where one pauses and gathers.”It is a place for rest and repose.A suspended light casts a gentle glow at the center of the pavilion, illuminating an enclosed interior where people may sit, converse, and find stillness amid the flow of space.

We lowered the spatial scale within the pavilion, inviting visitors to sit naturally. This subtle reduction in height brings people physically closer to the ground — allowing them to quietly observe the craftsmanship and intricate joinery of the flooring beneath their feet.

The space is conceived as a versatile arena — one that can host refined gatherings of scholars while also serving as a professional venue for commercial exchange. The surrounding wooden wall panels can transform at any moment into an interactive material discussion zone; their foldable hooks and shelves function both as product displays and as a modular magnetic hanging system, adaptable to diverse spatial needs.

Chapter III: Wooden Artifacts

Within the Xuan Chamber, we sought to integrate traditional woodworking techniques throughout the entire space — mortise and tenon joints, inlays, and wedges — blending contemporary materials with classical craftsmanship. In doing so, the artistry of ARTWOOD becomes an immersive spatial experience, where structure and craftsmanship merge into one seamless expression.

Thus, the mortise-and-tenon joint is no longer merely a technique — it becomes the skeleton of the space, where the warmth of aged wood coexists in harmony with the strength of metal.

“Heaven has its seasons, Earth its vital breath, materials their beauty, and craftsmanship its skill.” Through a series of creations built from interlocking flooring pieces, we explore the forms of wood — crafting from new perspectives and experiences: bars, lighting fixtures, furniture, display stands, and more.

Using the language of modern design, we deconstruct traditional imagery, combining bent wood with structural stability.Between flowing lines and steadfast supports, a subtle balance emerges — endowing each wooden creation with both contemporary tension and a quiet sense of poetry.

Epilogue

Silent yet profound — embodying ritual in its form, and philosophy in its shape.

Within the Xuan Chamber, we trace the lineage of traditional Chinese woodworking,

seeking the wooden imprints carved by time itself.
