From Tasting a Hundred Herbs to Reading a Hundred Books

A Contemporary Interpretation of the Zhuzhou Mi Bookstore

Zhuzhou is a significant cultural hearth for Emperor Yan, Shennong. His legendary act of “tasting a hundred herbs” to discern their properties established a primal way of understanding the world through exploration and empirical practice. The essence of this spirit lies in inquiry and knowledge gained through direct experience.

The designers adopt the metaphor of a “Contemporary Herb Garden” as the overarching concept. Just as Shennong measured nature with his body to discern all things, the bookstore connects readers to the world through reading, generating knowledge and awareness.

In this project, MOC translates the spirit of Shennong’s natural experimentation—the journey “from tasting a hundred herbs to reading a hundred books”—into a sustained spatial narrative of intellectual exploration. Within a commercial context, the design aspires to cultivate an ecosystem of knowledge that encourages discovery and exchange. Here, the acquisition, reflection, and dissemination of ideas form a continuous loop, transforming the bookstore into a vital spiritual sanctuary for public reading in the contemporary city.

The Contemporary Herb Garden

The overall spatial atmosphere is grounded in a restrained, predominantly timber-based material palette, complemented by the textured finishes of exposed aggregate, the warmth of woven rattan, and the vitality of integrated greenery. These elements create an environment that feels warm, calm, and suggestive of organic growth.

Reading Area

The functional layout unfolds from the “Herb Garden” metaphor, creating a system of interconnected zones. Inspired by the imagery of the “Grain Barn,” “Herb Compendium,” “The Vertical Forum,” “Exotic Garden,” and “Seedling Nursery,” the zones respectively correspond to reading, café, forum/theater, cultural retail, and children’s areas. This sequence moves from nourishment and cultivation to sharing and extension, accommodating diverse reading and social needs within a unified spatial framework.

As the core programmatic zone, Mi Reading embodies the function of “spiritual nourishment,” drawing its core inspiration from the imagery of a “Grain Barn.” Solid timber bookshelves establish a clear spatial order, while accents of woven rattan introduce a tactile warmth. Through a restrained material language, the design balances rational structure with natural texture, allowing the act of reading to return to a state of simplicity and focus.

Café Counter

Mi Café serves as a transitional pause within the rhythm of reading—a place for reflection and informal exchange. Taking a cue from the “Herb Compendium,” the strategic use of greenery reinforces the botanical metaphor and extends the material and atmospheric continuity from the reading area. Here, the aroma of coffee intertwines with the scent of books, providing a moment of respite within the reading journey.

The café area continues the ambiance of the reading zone, incorporating more greenery to echo the “Herb Compendium” concept.

Details

This underlying narrative is further strengthened by wall-mounted displays of botanical specimens within the café.

The Vertical Forum

Mi Stage, the public heart of the bookstore, is strategically situated within a double-height void created by opening up the floor slab between the two levels. This intervention establishes a powerful vertical anchor at the spatial core.

View of the Vertical Forum (Mi Stage) from within the bookstore

Enclosing the stepped seating area on three sides, the full-height book walls create a tranquil atmosphere, immersing visitors in an embrace of knowledge. A ceiling of mirrored stainless steel visually extends and multiplies these vertical bookshelves, generating a layered sense of depth and metaphorically suggesting the limitless expansion of knowledge.

From the corridor overlooking the forum, one can gaze down upon the stepped seating. The mirrored ceiling captures both the spatial volume and the movement of people within it, creating a dynamic interplay between the real and the reflected, fostering a subtle connection between observer and space.

Looking back at the stepped seating from the corridor, the mirror reflects both the forum and its audience

To root the space in local memory and connect contemporary reading with the city’s accumulated history, the designers incorporated materials bearing the patina of the past. The steps of the Mi Forum are fashioned from reclaimed granite blocks, locally sourced from demolished old buildings in Zhuzhou. These very stones once served as everyday elements in urban life—as thresholds, hitching posts, or horse troughs.

Through material reuse, history is embedded into the present in tangible form, extending the dimension of time within the space. The stepped forum functions not only as a place for reading and pause, but also as an open theater for sharing and dialogue. Individual reading transforms into collective expression, making “sharing” one of the most powerful acts within the space.

Growth and Extension: The Exotic Garden & The Seedling Nursery

Mi Lifestyle and Little Mi represent the “exotic blossoms” and “new seedlings” within the Contemporary Herb Garden narrative, positioned as the spatial sequence’s natural extension. Ascending the steps behind the Vertical Forum leads to the second floor, where the spatial rhythm gradually shifts from openness and collectivity to lightness and vitality.

Mì Lifestyle unfolds along the second-floor corridor, where brighter display systems and varied scales organize a fluid exhibition interface. Everyday pleasures beyond reading are discovered naturally along the journey—like encountering unexpected flowers in a garden—infusing the space with liveliness and imagination.

Diverse shelving configurations enhance a playful and dynamic atmosphere

Little Mi defines a relatively independent children’s domain through a more embracing scale and softer color palette. Responding directly to the “Seedling Nursery” metaphor, the designers establish a strong visual identity with a fresh light-green tone. Suspended acoustic elements beneath the exposed dark ceiling evoke layered imagery of tender green treetops emerging against a deeper forest canopy.

The children’s picture-book reading area is placed along the window façade. Low-scale tables and chairs are arranged in front of the shelves, creating a relaxed and inviting setting for parent-child reading, beautifully illuminated by natural light.
