When the millennia-old wisdom of wooden construction stirs awake in the twilight, it transforms into a luminous living entity dancing with the sea breeze.
Prologue: A Vessel of Time Between Sea and Sky
As dusk settles over Aranya’s coastline, sea wind carries the sound of tides across the sand. A glowing geometric structure stands quietly between the desert and the sea — this is our declaration of Oriental philosophy presented for the Migratory Birds 300 Art Festival: 「The Breath of Mortise and Tenon」. Within its limited 300-hour artistic lifespan, through the humility of wooden construction and the spirituality of light and shadow, it achieves a modern interpretation of traditional craftsmanship.

Structural Awakening: Three Rebirths of Mortise and Tenon
Modular Gene: A Symbiotic Vision of Geometry
Rejecting grand narratives, the installation is assembled purely by mortise and tenon joints from hundreds of standard wooden components. The modules multiply organically like cell division, growing free-form outlines within a set of rules, echoing the symbiotic philosophy of “individual and community” embodied in migratory bird journeys.
Geometric modules constructing the doorway
The white wooden structure within the Migratory Bird Sand City
Deliberate gaps are designed between the wooden frames to create breathing spaces: they allow sea breezes to flow freely, and also make the structure tremble slightly under stress — the architecture is no longer a static sculpture, but a living skeleton that vibrates with the wind.
The geometric order within the gaps
Gaps and Breath: From Order to Warmth
As night falls, warm yellow light from inside the installation permeates outward. Through the mortise-tenon joints and modular gaps, the light weaves a network of radiance against the dark silhouette, like golden blood flowing through a living organism.
A case of mortise and tenon with light
The rhythm of light and shadow is set to mimic breathing: the light rises and falls gently with a programmed cycle, making the installation “inhale” the twilight and “exhale” halos like a living being. For the first time, mortise and tenon — a craft frozen in time for a thousand years — is endowed with a biological sense of temporality.
Blurred Boundaries: Heaven and Earth as the Exhibition Hall
The open-frame structure dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior: visitors can step inside, feeling the wooden beams transform from mere “components” into “corridors of wind”; they can also gaze up at its silhouette suspended against the sky, contemplating the Oriental worldview of “the small structure and the vast universe”.
The exhibit itself is the exhibition gallery

The dimming sky in the distance and the warm glow of the installation engage in a layered dialogue of “civilizational warmth”: the cool blue of nature and the gentle warmth of human civilization.
A white box resembling a moonlit treasure case
Temporal Poetics: The 300-Hour Life Cycle of Migratory Birds
The Vitality of Materials: The side surfaces of the raw wood are left unfinished, allowing sea wind and moisture to leave their marks — over 300 hours, the wood’s color fades from pale yellow to deep brown, recording the traces of climate and extending the growth rings of the wood grain.
The continuation of growth rings
The Rhythm of Light and Shadow: At night, the lighting shifts through different breathing frequencies — sometimes like the soft panting of a fledgling, sometimes like the ebb and flow of the sea — constructing a perceptible temporal rhythm through light.
The rhythm of light, the breath of mortise and tenon
The Deconstruction of Walls: Traditional walls are dismantled into a transparent three-dimensional grid system. Wooden components intersect and overlap horizontally and vertically, forming a semi-open space that provides enclosure without blocking the view. The gaps between modules serve as “wind passages”, enabling the walls to fulfill multiple roles simultaneously: structure, enclosure, ventilation, and light transmission.
The deconstruction and de-bordering of walls

The Reorganization of Beams and Columns: A nonlinear deconstructed beam-and-column system features hollowed-out walls, pixelated beams, and stacked columns. Linear forms are broken down into hundreds of short component units. The decentralized load-bearing system breaks free from traditional gravity principles, eliminating the hierarchy of architectural elements and achieving the democracy of spatial deconstruction. Every component is an equal “participant” in both load-bearing and aesthetic expression, ultimately creating an ethereal, floating “feather-like lightness”.
The restructuring of the beam-column system

A light, feather-like sensation
The Gaps of Mortise and Tenon: By day, the light and shadow of the wooden structure amplify the perception of time, revealing a rhythmic cadence. The life of mortise and tenon transcends cycles of time. Light filters through the gaps of the joints, leaving a striking stroke of light and shadow upon the sand and sea.
The order of mortise and tenon and the gaps of light
The Exhibition as Theater: The wooden modules of the installation, together with the scattered benches, form a temporary theater. The benches are both islands and archipelagos: sitting alone, one can watch the wind breathe through the mortise and tenon in quiet contemplation; gathering in groups, they form an impromptu tribe gazing at the “glowing embers”. Sitting and observing are already part of the performance. The gaps in the exhibition corridor become the stage for “the wind’s performance”.
The theater of mortise and tenon
The corridor of wind, which is the performance of the wind

Impromptu Performance: All cages are merely scaffolding for the brave to climb. The bird-man’s ascent becomes a contemporary fable of awakening and breakthrough. The module beneath his body transforms from a “confining cell” into a “king’s throne”. From this elevated vantage point, the complex grid that once trapped the body becomes a landscape that can be examined and understood at one’s feet. This is a reversal of spatial power — he evolves from a prisoner within the system into a reader and master of the structure.

Epilogue: After 300 Hours, Where Does the Light Go?
As the art festival draws to a close, the installation’s lights flicker for the last time like the ebb and flow of tides, and the mortise-tenon structure completes its quiet finale.
The solo dance of the Bird Man

Mortise and tenon is no longer just a living fossil of ancient wooden architectural heritage; it has become a luminous migratory bird coexisting with humans on the coastline.
With its breath, it proves that time can be built with one’s own hands, and eternity can manifest in a fleeting moment.
In the night wind of Aranya, the travelers who once wandered through the gaps of light in the wooden structure will eventually carry away a seed of wind in their hearts.
As the tide of modernity sweeps across the riverbed of civilization, we can still draw on the humble wisdom of a single mortise and a single tenon to build an eternal beacon of warmth in this ever-changing era.

The Structure’s Final Home:After the exhibition, all modules can be disassembled and reassembled into community furniture such as benches, square tables, and side tables, continuing the cycle of “mortise and tenon rebirth” — returning from the exhibition space to a broader world.
