In 2023, Duravit AG, a leading manufacturer of designer bathrooms, celebrates its 20th anniversary of entering China market. HATCH Architects is commissioned to design Duravit’s Flagship showroom in Shanghai. The showroom locates in Shanghai’s Changning CBD, occupying an independent two-storied building.

Site

The building’s floor-to-ceiling glass facade ensures favorable indoor-outdoor interactions. The signage in Duravit’s iconic blue color can be seen from afar. The interior design showcases a combination of cultural elements of China and Germany, honoring Duravit’s mission as to make its customers’ lives a little better every day.

We design a set of suspending installations inspired by neon-lighted billboards in Shanghai. The billboards express the bathroom in different languages. Being complementary to each other, two sets of installations compose a narrative of Duravit’s journey from Hornberg to Shanghai, and from Germany to China.

Main entrance

Our design concept can be traced to Duravit’s origin in Hornberg, a town in Black Forest of Germany. On the left side at the entrance, HATCH team creates a wood grouse installation – symbolizing the origins of Duravit. An abstract design of the wood grouse was adopted into the brand logo in 1937. With the wood grouse installation, HATCH aspires to highlight Duravit’s intention that no matter of the time, the grouse always conveys a greeting from the brand’s birthplace back in the Black Forest and expresses the commitment to excellence that was brought all along the way from where the brand began.

HATCH creatively customizes a lighting system – We employ 3D scanning and printing technologies to recreates Duravit’s iconic ceramic basins, and the reversely installed basins are utilized as chandeliers.

Central display area

The center area on the first floor is designed to be a “stage,” where Duravit’s iconic bathroom furniture and bathroom ceramics can be showcased in turn. The “pedestals”, where products are installed to demonstrate the brand’s key technologies, are designed to assimilate Duravit’s packages. The “pedestals” are installed with wheels so that they can be moved away easily when necessary – and the vacant “stage” can be used to hold events and activities of all kinds, including forums, training sessions and press conferences.

A core area on the first floor is applied to showcase Duravit’s designs and products. Based on usage scenarios, we designed 15 mock bathrooms in different layouts. Ranging from 3m? to 15m?, all mock bathrooms are equipped with Duravit’s products.

The showcasing area visually presents Duravit’s brand value and aesthetics. The collections under a concept called “Artisan Line”, which covers the brand’s most premium product lines are shown here. The product showrooms offer visitors a glimpse into the brand’s product range, as well as inspiring them to come up with bathroom plans with individual solutions.

A huge staircase colored in Duravit blue stands as a background to the “stage” area. When going up to the second floor, visitors may learn about Duravit’s 200 -year history from the brand wall installed along the stairs.

The second floor serves as a space to elaborate Duravit’s narrative on lifestyle. The space is designed to be open and flexible – Two long tables sit in the middle of the space, whose layouts can be adjusted under different occasions, including business meetings, formal dinners, and special events. Folding doors, usually hidden in compartments, are designed to surround the long tables. The folding doors can be used as partitions to enclose a private area when necessary.

Some of the kitchen appliances on the second floor are provided by Gaggenau, which also originates from the Black Forest of Germany. In terms of brand spirit, Duravit coincides with Gaggenau’s pursuit of the ultimate in craftsmanship and performance. In addition, the lighting on the first floor is from the German brand Occhio and consists of basic lighting and design lighting.
