The climbing gyms that have sprung up like mushrooms in Shanghai are not just sports venues, but also new social spaces. Climbers can climb the routes they want on their own, or enjoy a wonderful workout with friends. Even the most solo climbers will find like-minded friends here; it’s a minimalist social experience of “quality over quantity”—only connecting with those they truly connect with. Even the most passionate person finds it incredibly easy to make new friends here, because people who love sports share a common minimalist trait that draws them closer.

In terms of design strategy, we aimed to use a minimalist design language to meet the functional and psychological needs of users. By presenting the design in the simplest and most straightforward way, we wanted everyone to understand at a glance how to use the space, allowing them to focus on enjoying the climbing process.

The spatial design strategy extends the angular, faceted language of the rock face throughout the entire space, further defining the overall visual presentation.

The reception area serves multiple functions, including brand display, consultation, guidance, leasing, retail, and coffee. The design unifies and partitions these functions through transitional walls, cabinets, pegboards, and a bar counter.

The spatial layout design strategy involves placing a “service island” in the center of the site, integrating functions such as bag storage, shoe changing, changing clothes, and self-service drinking water vending within a tunnel on this “island.” This ensures efficient use of these functions while maintaining considerable privacy, while also increasing the area of climbable walls on the perimeter to improve utilization. The side of the “island” facing the entrance features an eye-catching “whale head,” becoming the visual focal point of the entire space.

Although the area is not large, there are three continuous storefront in the shopping mall interior, which also gives the store a greater sense of mass. The second design concept is to embed a “wooden house” at this corner, a “house” with an overall design language.

Even while on the “island,” one can still observe the activity on the surrounding rock walls.

The first section of the facade is an independent takeaway retail space, offering quick-selling products such as desserts, sandwiches, bottled drinks, etc.

In the climbing wall area, apart from the climbing wall mats, there are only face-to-face rest areas to facilitate climbers to rest and chat.

The locker room handles are two rock points, allowing climbers to “feel” anytime, anywhere.
