“How many hutongs are there in Beijing?”

“There are three thousand six hundred famous hutongs, and there are more nameless hutongs than cow hair.”

The case is located in Wudaojie Hutong, in the southwest of the Dashilar area. It starts from the southern end of South Xinhua Street in the south and reaches the intersection of Tieshuxie Street, Cherry Xie Street, Tangzi Street and Hanjia Hutong in the north. This street was called the Wu Dao Temple in the Ming Dynasty, and the Wu Dao Temple was built in the 35th year of Ming Dynasty Wanli, and minister Wang Xiangqian of the Ming Military Department called this place “the place where the dragon vein traffic and horses converge” of Zhengyangmen and Xuanwumen, and Should be suppressed by temples. Commissioned by the owner, this time we wanted to design a special bar in the old Beijing alley.

The original site is a courtyard facing South Xinhua Street, and the neighbors are all residents who have lived here for a long time. Passing through from a narrow entrance, the spatial relationship is a simplified version of Beijing’s traditional courtyard, and we have renovated the courtyard – although the original spatial properties are completely enclosed, we want to still maintain a sense of density and order, so we make the closed courtyard as transparent and bright as possible. We pay attention to the feeling after entering the inner courtyard, that is, from the beginning of the closing, entering their own world, and the visitor sees the building in his own field of vision, which is the logic that runs through the design process, which requires both a certain sense of breathability and privacy.

Entrance view ©UK STUDIO

The entrance is L-shaped leading to the interior of the courtyard. In order to avoid the dullness caused by the heavy walls, we embedded a floor-to-ceiling glass wall as far as the visitor’s field of vision can see, on the one hand, to increase the lighting, on the other hand, the interior scene disappears with the movement of people, controllably allowing people to see the landscape little by little, and gradually creating a sequence of spaces.

The inclusion of the transitional space becomes part of the overall composition of the building, synergistically shaping the architectural form, enriching the contrast between virtual and real, and the ceiling retains the old texture materials in the building site, and forms an entrance gray space to meet the good transition of indoor and outdoor spaces. In the space, through the deconstruction of materials, overlapping and recombining.

To walk slowly down a flight of steps to the interior of the courtyard, the atrium is at the heart of the courtyard’s enjoyment of life. In this case, under the condition of maintaining the existing house structure unchanged, the materials and shapes are used to correspond to the history, and at the same time, the form and proportion are adjusted according to the material characteristics to control its roughness and sense of The Times. Through the fine-tuning of the part relationship , the temperament of the courtyard space is changed and diversified use is satisfied, so that the traditional small courtyard can be integrated into the contemporary urban life with The Times.

Interior, architecture and nature are integrated in the mutual definition, forming a spatial structure that can penetrate each other. We organized and repaired the walls, doors and Windows, roof frames, floor paving and other structural systems in the original courtyard. In the process of design and construction, modern industrial materials and processing methods that are inconsistent with the region and historical times are avoided. On this basis, the transparent floor-to-ceiling glass wall is embedded into the main support columns of the brick and concrete structure, Thus enable interactions and communications occurred between these two areas.

View from the atrium towards the interior©UK STUDIO

By constructing interactive and flowing relations inside and outside the space, the site itself deepens the diverse experience of the five senses, and forms the narrative logic inside the space. The dark sand and stone floor is integrated into the base, allowing rainwater to flow away quickly and keeping the room dry. The placement of the mirror pool and the rock is based on the concept of the courtyard landscape:People live and sit safely next to houses near mountains and rivers.

Into the interior space, the wall and the ground are matched with the same color material, and the roof is the wooden beam left over before the transformation. We hope that the selection of building materials can lead to the historical weight correspondence between the new implanted space and the original building, and the spatial nature of the building is often reflected in this relationship between the virtual and the real.

Details of the bar©UK STUDIO

The seven-star cabinet is characterized by “lifting the hand, lowering the head, and viewing the whole medicine box in half step”. Considering the multiple functions of the bar, such as reception and storage, we integrated the concept of the traditional Chinese medicine cabinet into the design of the bar. As part of the interior construction, this design not only conveys the unique tone of the site, but also becomes a brand image with a pecial sense of atmosphere.

The relationship between the roof and the supporting columns©UK STUDIO

The main hall is stripped of redundant partition walls and is supported only by wooden structures to form an open space, which slowly unfolds along the axis. Space is a carrier that will be affected by everything it carries and will allow different thinkers to have different experiences. We wanted to preserve this “blunt power” of the original environment, and visitors can truly feel the building’s past through the mottled texture of the original walls.

▲陈设一角,details of the corner©UK STUDIO

The presence of the furniture does not make us particularly notice them, as if they belong here, but every part must not be missing. It is worth mentioning that The furniture is from the owner’s own collection. In the dialogue between the continuous traction external environment and the internal construction, the furniture gave the emotion to blend into the space.

The enclosure space forms a courtyard hidden in the city, which allows the public activities of the interior space to be moderately extended outside, and then leads to the exit of the space. The inside and outside are interrelated with each other. The room is the courtyard, and the courtyard is also the room.

From renovation to new building, any imagination we have of the city is based on the connection between the subjective consciousness and the reality. In this case, we reshape the design upwards with the texture of the original site. In the future, how to make better use of the existing renovated space and the remaining space of the yard will be the topic we continue to discuss.
