Organizing Space Through the Layers of a Parfait

OHARA is a parfait-focused dessert shop located in Hangzhou, with an interior area of approximately 100 square meters. Taking the brand’s signature dessert—the parfait—as its starting point, the design explores how the layered relationships among different ingredients can be translated into a spatial language.

The richness of a parfait does not come from any single flavor, but from the combination of fruit, cream, and ingredients of varying textures within a single vessel. Freshness and richness, lightness and density retain their distinct qualities while coming together through a gradual progression of layers to create a cohesive sensory experience.

This relationship of being “layered yet interconnected” became the central design concept of OHARA. Rather than directly imitating the physical form of the dessert, the design organizes materials, colors, furniture, and light to translate layers of taste into a spatial experience that can be seen, touched, and gradually perceived. This sense of layering extends beyond the interior, beginning at the storefront facing the street.

Working with the existing street-facing boundary, the design gives part of this edge over to vegetation, introducing linear planters along the perimeter of the shop. The dark planter boxes and the metal mesh railing behind them establish a clearly defined horizontal edge, while grasses, flowers, and foliage of varying heights grow through this framework, softening the rigid lines of the building facade. Positioned between the street and the shop, the plants become the first landscape element encountered from outside. Seen through the glazing, they also create overlapping visual layers with the interior beyond. The planters are not conceived as static decorative features. As the seasons change, the planting can be renewed, allowing the street-facing facade to continue evolving over time. Passersby can experience this small planted landscape without entering the shop. Within an otherwise clearly defined commercial boundary, the design introduces a softer transition, establishing a connection between OHARA and the everyday life of the street.

Inside, the spatial sequence continues to unfold from lightness to depth, and from openness to enclosure.

The entrance and front area establish a bright spatial foundation through textured white walls, exposed structural beams, and silver-toned metal elements. The continuity of the light-colored surfaces maintains a sense of openness and transparency, while black frames and dark cabinetry are interspersed throughout, establishing a clear visual order against the bright background. Much like the fruit and cream forming the uppermost layers of a parfait, this area introduces the interior sequence with a sense of freshness and lightness. The counter area further develops this relationship. White grid shelving is enclosed within black metal frames, with transparent glassware arranged inside the regular compartments, allowing the display itself to become part of the elevation’s composition. Charcoal-gray cabinetry and metal countertops create a relatively restrained working surface, while an oversized industrial-style pendant light establishes a distinct visual focal point above. The combination of regular lines, transparent vessels, and industrial materials allows this functional area to maintain a clear yet layered visual character.

Rather than relying entirely on solid partitions to define different zones, the design establishes spatial continuity and distinction through material transitions, changes in floor level, and variations in ceiling treatment. As the space extends inward, dark wood finishes gradually replace the lighter surfaces, continuing from the walls onto the ceiling. A raised timber platform, together with the surrounding wood-clad surfaces, defines a relatively independent area, creating a “space within a space.” The platform establishes a clear boundary between zones, while the continuous wooden surfaces reinforce the sense of enclosure, allowing the atmosphere to shift gradually from the openness of the front area toward a quieter, more intimate environment. If the light-colored walls and metal elements establish the first, refreshing layer of the interior, the introduction of wood, leather, and textiles gradually brings warmth and depth. These material transitions are not merely decorative treatments; they work together with the spatial organization to give each area its own visual density and sensory character.

The combination of vintage furniture forms another important design strategy within the project.

Rather than selecting a uniform furniture collection, the design brings together leather dining chairs, metal-framed chairs, striped banquette seating, lounge chairs, glass coffee tables, and patterned rugs within the same interior. Differences in form, scale, material, and sense of enclosure are deliberately preserved, while recurring tones of dark brown, black, and silver-gray establish a sense of cohesion. These pieces are not simply independent decorative objects; they actively contribute to the formation of different spatial settings. Long tables provide a relatively open format for shared seating, wall-side banquettes establish continuous and clearly defined seating boundaries, while lounge chairs and rugs create more relaxed areas reminiscent of a living room. Through these varied seating arrangements and furniture combinations, the relatively uniform dining environment of a conventional dessert shop is transformed into a more diverse range of spatial experiences. Commercial and domestic settings overlap here, giving the space a more relaxed atmosphere beyond its primary dining function.

Lighting further reinforces the layered transitions between different areas.

Above the counter, a large metal pendant emphasizes the working surface, while exposed lighting cables descend along the black framework, creating a light, linear composition against the wall. Moving into the wood-clad areas, wall sconces and localized points of light bring the scale of illumination closer to the furniture and its occupants. Warm light falls across wood, leather, and textiles, revealing subtle variations in their textures, tones, and tactile qualities. Compared with the overall atmosphere established by the larger material surfaces, smaller decorative details play a lighter, more subtle role in connecting the different areas. White linen tablecloths and transparent glassware soften the visual weight of dark furniture and metal elements. Wall-mounted speakers, a typewriter, and vintage objects introduce traces of everyday life. Purple irises, yellow flowers, and lemons provide small but vivid accents of color, appearing across the counter, niches, and dining tables. Like the contrasting flavors that punctuate a parfait, these smaller objects introduce subtle variations between light and dark, warmth and coolness, solidity and transparency. They also establish visual connections between areas that otherwise retain their individual identities.

From the seasonally changing plants in the street-facing planters to the gradual transition from light to dark material surfaces inside, and from the regular geometry of metal elements to the varied textures of vintage furniture, OHARA translates the concept of a parfait’s layers into a series of continuous spatial relationships. The plants introduce changes that unfold over time, while materials, furniture, and light establish a sensory sequence that gradually reveals itself as visitors move through the space.

Freshness and richness are not treated as opposing styles, just as openness and enclosure are not conceived as disconnected spatial conditions. Instead, they are linked through transitions in materials, surfaces, furniture, and light, extending outward through the planted streetscape into the everyday life of the city. Just as a parfait achieves its complete flavor through the combination of distinct ingredients, OHARA seeks to preserve the individuality of each spatial layer while bringing them together to form a cohesive identity that belongs to the brand.
