minimei Snacks Selection Store is a new brand created by Pangmei Noodle House. It is run by a single manager, but in its form, it consists of a cluster of different sorts of snack shops.
Our design follows three key steps: firstly, we arranged eight ‘boxes’ under a large roof; secondly, we assigned a distinct ‘vibe’ to each box; thirdly, we placed human-scale furniture in the remaining vacant space.
A shared roof often implies a common proprietor and the dull uniformity of a unified scheme, whereas eight well defined, unevenly sized boxes under the same roof symbolize a will to “bond everything together” without compromising legibility.
This space itself is akin to a prototype allowing a brand-new type of ‘selection store’ to be easily understood and visually intuitive.

Therefore, each box is meant to be a stall for a specific snack category emanating a particular ‘vibe’.
The eclectic ‘vibe’ of each box comes from the texture of its surface. We deliberately played with boundaries between concepts of ‘material’ and ‘texture’: to this goal, the boxes are designed to be a blank form, ideally as abstract and malleable as possible. To show what we aim to achieve by highlighting ‘texture’ rather than ‘material’, we intentionally produced a variety of textured effects that defy conventional material logic, such as bricks laid at a 45-degree diagonal to simulate a masonry wall: a closer look at the corners reveals that this is just a veneer lacking thickness.
The correspondence between texture and “vibe” is generalized throughout the whole venue, and it itself generates room for imagination. For instance, steamed food is represented by misty gold bricks, beverages by black glazed bricks conveying a sense of mystery, grilled food is symbolized by rusted steel plates, and sponge cakes mimicked by large-grain granitic plaster, complete with colored grains protruding as chunks of candy….
Space around the boxes flows naturally. We arranged glass walls in the least intrusive manner possible to demarcate areas inside and outside the store.
All indoor furniture in the interior is fixed to the ground, while outdoor flower beds and benches resemble granular fragments created by dismantling the boxes. The presence of furniture gives the space a sense of scale and guides customers in making decisions such as “buy to go” “dine in” or “eat at the counter.” At that moment, boxes transmute from raw shapes into houses, and the abstract conceptual toy shape transforms into a meaningful dining space.
