In the contemporary urban landscape, cafes have long transcended their primary function as mere beverage providers, evolving into multifaceted domains that accommodate emotional transitions and foster social interaction. Situated in Yongkang, FOUR SEASONS COFFEE not only fulfills the client’s desire for a “timeless” and “tranquil” spatial quality, but also confronts the inherent challenges of the original site. Adopting “Floating Structure” as our core concept, we executed a direct and powerful structural intervention to neutralize the site’s disadvantages and redefine its spiritual core.

From an “Obtrusive Pillar” to a “Spiritual Anchor”

The inception of this design was rooted in the desire to break free from the site’s constraints. The original site of Four Seasons Coffee presented an irregular geometric form. However, the most daunting challenge was a massive, unremovable, and highly obtrusive load-bearing pillar standing squarely in the center of the room. Like a forcefully inserted punctuation mark, it abruptly ruptured the continuity of an already irregular spatial flow.

Confronted with this “unignorable presence,” we chose not to conceal or downplay it, but rather to face it head-on. The design boldly utilized this pillar as its baseline, transforming it into the structural core that commands the entire layout. By embedding two rugged steel I-beams on either side of the pillar to act as load-bearing “relays,” we extended and cantilevered a massive wooden framework roof outward. This roof, suspended in mid-air, serves as the ultimate physical manifestation of our “Floating Structure” concept.

The introduction of the cantilevered roof acts much like a giant umbrella unfurled within the interior, instantly recalibrating the previously loose spatial scale. Consequently, the very pillar once viewed as a fundamental flaw seamlessly transitions into the backbone supporting the soul of the space. Sheltered beneath this “giant umbrella,” the core bar area naturally emerges. It not only claims the absolute center stage in the physical realm but also cultivates a profound sense of centripetal force and sanctuary on a psychological level, ultimately becoming the definitive visual centerpiece of the entire cafe.

The Marteriality of Low Saturation

In curating the material palette, we adhered to the client’s mandate for a space with “enduring appeal.” Eschewing ostentatious decor and highly saturated, vibrant hues, the entire environment is anchored in a composed, understated gray palette. This gray is by no means a monolithic flat wash; rather, it cultivates a rich sense of depth through the interplay of diverse material textures.

The bar’s facade and several specific parts of floor are clad in gray linear tiles, whose delicate vertical lines elongate the visual proportions while imbuing the space with a sense of structural order. For the focal points—the cantilevered roof and expansive wall cabinetry—marine plywood was selected. The wood’s warm hues and natural edge grain neutralize the starkness of the gray undertones, breathing an organic vitality into the space. Meanwhile, square stainless steel tubing is interspersed throughout shelving supports, table legs, and detailed edge finishes. The austere, crisp, and industrial aesthetic of the stainless steel strikes a compellingly tense contrast with the rustic tiles and the inviting warmth of the plywood.

Ruggedness and refinement, coldness and warmth—these low-saturation materials, bathed in the interplay of natural daylight and artificial illumination, project a texture capable of withstanding the test of time, perfectly fulfilling the initial vision of a truly “timeless” design.

A Tranquil Archipelago Akin to Home

If the “floating structure” of the main bar is the central melody of the space, then the scattered seating areas surrounding it serve as a soothing concerto. The underlying logic for the soft furnishings and decor was defined as the “choreography of scenes.”

Rather than adopting the homogenized, high-density seating arrangements typical of conventional cafes, we meticulously choreographed a series of independent yet interconnected scenes tailored to the corners of the irregular floor plan. By curating vintage, ergonomically designed lounge armchairs paired with stainless steel round tables, and accentuating specific areas with vibrant potted greenery, each seating zone has been crafted into a comfortable micro-space reminiscent of a “corner of one’s home.”

Whether through the interplay of low-saturation leather seating in hues of gray, white, green, and orange, or the dappled light cast upon the tabletops, every element works to cultivate a relaxed and tranquil ambiance. Upon entering, guests feel as though they are situated in a corner of a living room; they can perceive the openness of the overall space while simultaneously enjoying a fleeting moment of personal time within their own “exclusive territory.” Furthermore, a Livehouse stage function is integrated deep within the space. The dark-toned treatment of the black textured walls and professional equipment allows it to silently recede into the background during the day, while at night, it seamlessly accommodates vibrant musical performances, achieving an elastic transition in the spatial atmosphere.

An Understated Posture and Micro-Interactions

Shifting the focus outward, the facade of Four Seasons Coffee continues the restrained and rational design language of the interior. Expansive gray walls with a horizontal texture, as grounded as sedimentary rock layers, establish the building’s foundational tone. Conversely, the entrance and signage areas make bold use of rugged, black split-face stone. The juxtaposition of gray and black, smooth and rough, forges a striking visual memory point. To break the enclosed nature of the architectural shell, the facade features fully operable folding glass windows. During pleasant moments, the boundary between indoors and outdoors is completely dissolved.

We view the design of Four Seasons Coffee as a spatial negotiation that turned passivity into proactivity. The central “pillar” served as both a problem and a catalyst for design inspiration. Starting from an obtrusive column, we extended the eaves of a “floating structure,” which in turn generated a rational dialogue of materials and the creation of warm, inviting scenes. By successfully balancing commercial demands with spatial aesthetics, we have ultimately constructed a “realm of four seasons” amidst the bustling city—a sanctuary where people can pause and find peace of mind.
